Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Long Island Renters

A room-by-room move-out cleaning checklist for renters in Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens, covering the spots landlords check first at the walk-through.

Empty apartment kitchen cleaned for a move-out

Moving out is stressful enough without a cleaning surprise at the end. Your landlord or property manager will walk the unit before returning your deposit. A clean, empty apartment makes that walk-through simple. Here is the checklist we work from when we clean a rental before the keys go back.

Before you start

Check your lease first. Some leases list specific cleaning expectations, such as carpet care or oven cleaning. Others only ask that the unit be returned in the condition you received it.

Take photos of each room after the cleaning is done. Date them and keep them with your lease. They help if a question comes up later.

Clean the unit after your belongings are out. An empty room shows everything, so the clean has to reach everything too.

Kitchen

The kitchen gets the closest look at most walk-throughs. Grease and crumbs hide in places you stopped noticing years ago.

  • Empty and wipe the inside of every cabinet and drawer, including the corners
  • Wipe cabinet fronts, hinges, and handles to remove grease
  • Clean the refrigerator inside and out, including shelves, drawers, and door seals
  • Pull the fridge out if you can, then clean the floor and wall behind it
  • Clean the oven interior, the racks, and the broiler drawer
  • Degrease the stovetop, burner grates, knobs, and the range hood
  • Scrub the sink, the faucet, and the drain area
  • Wipe the backsplash and clean the grout lines
  • Wipe the outside and inside of the microwave and the dishwasher door
  • Sweep and mop the floor, including under the toe kicks

Bathrooms

Bathrooms show neglect fast. Soap scum and hard water spots are the usual problems.

  • Scrub the tub, the shower walls, and the shower door or curtain rod
  • Clean the grout and the caulk lines along the tub
  • Clean the toilet inside and out, including the base and the bolts
  • Wipe the vanity, the sink, and the faucet, then polish the mirror
  • Empty and wipe the medicine cabinet and the vanity drawers
  • Clean the exhaust fan cover, which collects a thick layer of dust
  • Wipe the towel bars, the toilet paper holder, and the light fixtures
  • Mop the floor and wipe the baseboards behind the toilet

Bedrooms and living areas

These rooms look clean at first glance once the furniture is gone. Look closer at the edges.

  • Wipe baseboards, door frames, and the tops of doors
  • Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures
  • Wipe light switches, outlet covers, and door handles
  • Clean inside the closets, including shelves and rods
  • Wipe window sills and window tracks
  • Spot-clean scuffs and marks on the walls
  • Vacuum carpets slowly, especially along the walls
  • Mop hard floors, including inside the closets

The spots landlords check first

Every walk-through is different. Still, a few places come up again and again:

  • Behind the fridge and the stove. Dust and grease collect where no one looks.
  • Inside the oven. A dirty oven is easy to spot when the door opens.
  • Window tracks. Dirt and dead bugs settle in the tracks over the years.
  • Bathroom vents. The fan cover turns gray, and it is right at eye level.
  • Cabinet interiors. Crumbs and sticky rings stay in shelf corners.

If you only have time for a few extra tasks, start here.

What you should leave for the landlord

Some things are not part of a cleaning. Repairs, paint touch-ups, and patching nail holes belong to a handyman. Carpet shampooing is a separate service too. Check your lease to see what is expected from you.

Plan around your move-out date

Timing matters on a move-out. Book the clean for the day after your movers leave, and before the walk-through. That way nothing gets tracked back in.

Tell us your walk-through date when you call. We plan the visit around it. If your movers run late, let us know and we adjust where we can.

Doing it yourself, or calling us

A move-out clean takes longer than most people expect, even in a small unit. Many renters are also packing, working, and setting up a new home at the same time.

We clean empty homes and apartments across Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens. The job covers cabinet and drawer interiors, appliances, bathrooms, floors, and baseboards. Inside the oven and inside the refrigerator are add-ons. Mention them when you ask for an estimate.

We price by the size and condition of the unit, not by the hour. You know the number before we start. If something does not look right, tell us within 24 hours. We come back and re-clean it, free.
